Our house
Welcome to Huis Arts Prins.
There's been a break-in before, so please always lock all the doors.
Kitchen
If you're house-sitting for us, that includes being welcome to eat and drink anything in our house! Help yourself!
Lights
On the kitchen windowsill there's a little button to turn on the lights in the kitchen cabinets.
Dishwasher
The dishwasher tablets are under the sink.
You can start the dishwasher by first pressing the power button on the left and then the start button on the right.
Coffee
We have a Sage coffee grinder and a small DeLonghi espresso machine.
The grinder: press once to turn it on, and once more to grind and fill. Then you tamp the coffee down yourself with the tamper that sits in front of it.
The espresso machine: press the left button once to turn it on. As soon as it stops blinking, press the left button again for a lungo, or the middle button (the two-cup button) for an espresso.
Sometimes some ground coffee stays stuck under the filter (the piece with the little holes). A quick clean helps.
Quooker
Our tap is a boiling-water tap. Push the ring around the tap down twice. Hold it down the second time and turn the ring to the right. Then boiling water comes out of the tap.
Living room
Lights
The living room has ceiling lights connected to the light switches by the stairs.
The living room also has all kinds of floor lamps and light strips and such. Those are connected to a movable button. That button hangs on the lamp above the yellow chair. Press the big, middle button to turn the floor lamps on or off.
Projector
There's a projector in the living room. There's a remote with a red circle around an "ON" button. You use that to turn the projector on and off. The other remote has a Netflix button. You use that to control the projector.
Office
Lights
The office has a smart ceiling light. It turns on with the light switch next to the door. Sometimes the lamp blinks; if so, hold the light switch pressed until it stops.
Desk
There are two sit-stand desks in the office. Anyone is welcome to use them.
The desk on the right has a single Thunderbolt cable that provides both power and display. Plug it into your laptop and you're set.
The other desk has HDMI and power separately: one cable for the screen and one for power.
Printer
The printer is connected to the wifi. It's called "Epson XP-6100 Series". Feel free to use it whenever you need to print.
There's extra paper in the plastic bin labeled "Papier & Printen". There are also new cartridges there. Keep old cartridges; we recycle them.
Laundry room
In the laundry room there's a washer-dryer combo that you're welcome to use.
The detergent is on top of the machine. If it runs out, there are refill packs (Albert Heijn house brand) in the guest bedroom cabinet.
Pets
Send us photos of the cats. We miss them.
Barend
Barend is our Siamese/Ragdoll. He's grey-white. He's really very sweet. Barend loves cuddling. Barend doesn't like people who don't cuddle him.
Barend always likes being petted anywhere. There are no spots he dislikes. Being picked up he likes less than he used to.
Barend is almost never home; he loves being outside. Don't worry if you rarely see him.
Theo
Theo is our Maine Coon. He's also really very sweet. Theo usually doesn't want to cuddle. He likes being near people.
Theo is fine with petting these days. Playing he finds absolutely wonderful. You can pick him up and drape him over your shoulder, like a baby.
Theo likes to eat, and he likes to eat anything. He used to get quite annoying about it, but that's much less these days. If it does get to be too much, you can just push him away or pick him up and set him down elsewhere.
Care
Food
Barend and Theo are fed by feeding robots. They automatically dispense the right portions at set times, so you don't need to feed them by hand.
Theo's robot is in the kitchen; his food is in the cabinet to the left of the sink. Theo eats Hill's Prescription t/d dental cat food.
Barend's robot is in the office; his food is in the cabinet, in the corner above the printer (behind the door). Barend eats Hill's Prescription C/D cat food.
Check now and then whether there's still enough food in the robots and refill if a robot is almost empty. If the food is almost out, Martijn can order more. It's delivered the next day. The food has a limited shelf life.
Barend is often not home and then doesn't eat. Check his tray each day: if he hasn't eaten at home, throw the food away so it doesn't sit there.
Drinking
There are two automatic water fountains in our house: one downstairs in the kitchen and one in the living room. Running water helps Barend and Theo drink enough.
The fountain has a light on the inside so you can see if it's empty. You can lift the fountain up. Take the top off and fill it at the tap. Put the top back on and set the fountain back on its base station.
Litter box
There are two litter boxes. One is in the stair cupboard in the kitchen. The other is in the bathroom. Barend and Theo mostly go outside these days, so the litter boxes are barely used. You don't really need to check them; a glance now and then is enough.
Our litter box is a PeeWee. The pee is caught by the wood pellets. You scoop the poop out. You flush that down the toilet. A pellet may come along, but preferably not too many. Every few weeks the pellets need replacing.
The litter boxes are open: the top sits loose. That's on purpose: Barend and Theo don't like closed litter boxes.

Company and play
Outside
Barend and Theo are both allowed outside, whenever and wherever they like.
Technology
Martijn is a nerd, so quite a few things are smart. Sometimes a button doesn't work, but usually it's just broken then.
There's wifi everywhere in our house. The network is called "Huis Arts Prins" and the password is dit is een wachtwoord (four words, with spaces, lowercase only).
Maintenance
Plants
The plants can have water when the soil is dry. There's a watering can in the garden. There's a rain barrel in the garden.
Cleaner
Our cleaner's name is Regina. She comes every other Tuesday, between 11:00 and 16:00. We pay her €60.
Regina may come while you're house-sitting. We'll tell you in advance! We'll set the money out ready.
Before Regina comes we tidy the house up a bit. We do our best not to be home while Regina is there. Sometimes that doesn't work out, and then we stay in one room as much as possible, like the office.
Regina changes the bed in the big bedroom. We set out bedding for that. Sometimes we ask her not to change the bed.
